Fans get to see what’s happens outside of the Met Gala, but what happens inside has never been told before. Each year, the gala surprises guests with a performer that is a secret up until the event. Unfortunately for those who only get to see coverage of the red carpet, the performance is typically well unknown until someone from the inside leaks the exclusive information. For years, the lucrative Met Gala stage has held the stage for some of the brightest names in R&B and Hip-Hop.
Just a mere month before the release of the polarizing sixth studio album YEEZUS, Kanye West shared the stage with Blondie. Once Blondie closed her set, Kanye West surprised guests in an all-black leather set as he premiered album tracks, "I Am A God" and "On Sight" from his upcoming album, as well as a performance of the lead single "New Slaves". But that wasn’t all, Kanye then dedicated a song to his girlfriend at the time Kim Kardashian. That same night, Kim broke the Internet with her meme-filled outfit that even had the late great Robin Williams chiming into the fun. Sure, it was all fun and games, but Kanye’s performance was the true definition of punk meeting hip-hop for a chaotic showcase that ended on a heartfelt note as Kanye serenaded Kim with “You’re So Awesome”.
Two years after the release of his debut album channel ORANGE, Frank Ocean graced the Met Gala stage. Much like most things the singer-songwriter does, the performance was an ultra-exclusive presentation of some songs that haven’t been performed live since. Frank Ocean gave all the Super Rich Kids in attendance a performance medley which included channel ORANGE cuts as well as "Wise Man", the Django Unchained left-over. It was confirmed that Ocean did not premiere any new music from what his sophomore release Blonde would be. Check out the only clip from his performance.
After leaving everyone in awe with what has been considered to be arguably the greatest Met Gala outfit of all time, Rihanna played double duty as she tore the house down with a performance that night. The enchanting songstress performed some fan-favorites which included "Diamonds", "Pour it Up", and the most recently released (at the time) "Bitch Better Have My Money". As she walked across the stage, she made all of the A-Listers embrace her presence with a performance that gave everyone the energy that they needed. Rihanna was the star of the night, and the star of every Met Gala she attends.
Introduced by Idris Elba, the actor jokingly gave the singer a warm welcoming with the words “I like to call him Abel with the good hair”. The Weeknd then proceeded to perform a medley of his biggest hits from the blockbuster album Beauty Behind The Madness. Abel’s girlfriend at the time, Bella Hadid, recorded clips of the performance which showed everyone from Solange to Selena Gomez grooving along. The highlight of the performance was when Nas joined him to perform the official remix to the Kanye West produced hit, "Tell Your Friends".
