One-half of electronic music duo AlunaGeorge, Aluna ushered in a new era with a glimmering new single “Warrior”. Aluna bears it all as she reassures she’s fearless on a pulsating track.
The uplifting track by the British singer is one that is liberating, especially for the listeners that look like her. As one of the main ingredients for some of the most recognizable dance songs of the last couple of years, Aluna is reclaiming the crown, stepping into her spotlight, one that is long overdue.
“Warrior” is a danefloor ready anthem that is guaranteed to uplift spirits. But it goes beyond just that, instead it’s in rooted into unraveling the true history of dance music and making sure it doesn’t get erased.
In a statement on her upcoming solo album, Aluna explained her urge to reclaim what’s hers by saying: “I looked at the history of dance music and saw how, for example, Chicago House, known as the invention of house music, was pioneered in the Black and Latino LGTBQ+ communities which gave me the inspiration to stake my flag in the ground as a Black woman in dance music by taking control of production and songwriting with my own vibe”.
Working with the who’s who of dance music in the 2010s — which include the likes of DJ Snake, Disclosure, and ZHU, Aluna now realizes she has to accurately represent the origins of dance music. Now more than ever, Black creatives are no longer just fighting for their recognition, but they’re taking back what’s theirs and making it more authentic.
