Ty Dolla $ign finally releases his long-awaited collaboration with Kanye West, FKA Twigs, Serpentwithfeet, and Skrillex. The single was teased last summer as the lead single for Ty’s forthcoming album.
Over a pulsating house beat, Ty Dolla $ign croons about a sudden shift in perspective. Often used to refer on the loss of one’s ego, the term “ego death” is used by Ty as a way to highlight a failed relationship. Relying on substances post-heartbreak, he makes note that his ego is long gone, and was murdered once his lover walked away.
Meanwhile, Kanye West arrives with a verse that calls out false expectations and validations. Kanye plays on the effect of pressure that impacts one’s ego, and how reality boosts it. Specifically, he mentions the Super Bowl and the Grammys as examples of the ideology that is systematically orchestrated in favor for highlighting a certain propaganda.
Unlike Ty, Kanye doesn’t want to murder his own ego, but instead murder the ego from the outside perspective. The Skrillex produced number isn’t too far off of the sounds that Kanye has explored in the past, as the beat and the overall sound is familiar to The Life of Pablo album cut “Fade”.
Experimental artist serpentwithfeet, tackles the bridge with background vocals alongside Mr. West. While, FKA Twigs takes it home with an angelic outro for a grand finale to this all-star collaboration.
